Types of Immunity
There are two types of immunity:
- Innate immunity
- Acquired immunity
The innate immune system is the body’s first line of defense against infection, which can be initiated by a wide range of stimuli. The innate response to these stimuli involves three major types of cells: phagocytes, natural killer cells, and neutrophils.
Phagocytes engulf and destroy pathogens or cellular debris.
Natural killer cells attack virally infected or transformed cells.
Neutrophils kill microbes trapped in sticky secretions called pus. .
Innate immunity is the body’s natural response to foreign substances that are not recognized as self. It is made up of cells , molecules and proteins that provide protection from infection. They always present in the body, even when it is healthy. The innate immune system has three main functions:
1) Recognizing pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP) or foreign substances.
2) Producing proteins that can kill or inactivate pathogens.
3) Generating inflammation to help fight off the infection
Immune system has ability to adapt itself to disease and to generate pathogen immunity is termed as acquired immunity. It is also known as adaptive immunity.
Acquired immunity can come from:
- A vaccine
- Exposure to an infection or disease
- Another person’s antibodies (infection-fighting immune cells)
When some germs are introduced into your body from a disease, your body learns to target those germs in the future by making new antibodies.
Antibodies from another person can also help your body fight against infection.
